A Time of Peace / Columbus discovers the New World

For generations the Earls of Pembroke had held their own courts, in the Castle's Chancery, and dispensed their own justice. The King's writ had been unknown in the area.

When Henry VIII abolished the status of Earldom and created the County of Pembroke a tradition of self-governance which had existed in Pembrokeshire since 1189 came to an end. For a time Pembroke Castle slumbered - a peaceful place, still an impressive fortress but without a role.
